It is a town in district Skardu in Gilgit Baltistan. It is located in the Skardu valley which is 10 km wide and 40 km long in the union of the Indus and Shigar rivers. It is the largest district of northern areas. Skardu is most popular among mountaineers for it lies between two largest mountain ranges in the world, namely the Karakorum and the Himalayas. It is also famous among people trekking to high altitudes like to Baltoro glacier, K2 base camp and Concordia.
This town is beautiful and surrounded by dry rugged mountains and sand dunes. The tourists mostly from Pakistan are interested in the nearby Satpara Lake and Shangri La resort during June and July.
This region hosts four of the largest eight thousand and above sea level peaks, therefore, it is loved by hikers and trekkers from all over the world. The huge snow covered peaks like ‘Mashabum’, ‘K2’, ‘The Gasherbrums’, Broad peak’, ‘The Trango Towers’, and the huge glaciers of ‘Baltoro’, ‘Biafo’ and ‘Trango’ can be reached through Askole and Hush valleys.
The ‘Deosai plains’ which in the local Balti language are called “Byarsa” meaning ‘summer place’ can be reached through jeep safaris. This is the second highest plain after ‘Chang Tang’ in Tibet, in the world. These plains spread all the way to Ladakh and covers an area of approximately 3,000 sq. km. These are a habitat for snow leopards, Tibetan brown bear, ibex and wild horses. It is a perfect spot for wildlife photographers.
Shigar is a beautiful small village that lies a few miles to the north of Skardu. It is a striking village with terraced fields where almost anything can grow. This was once a small kingdom and the Shigar fort was the residence of the local ruler. Recently this fort has been renovated and been converted into a hotel.
The weather in Skardu is moderate because of the mountains surrounding it. These help to block the summer monsoon and the rainfall is very low during summers. During winters the weather becomes severe for Skardu becomes snow bound and has worst effects on the transport.
Some of the attractive lakes in the town include Snow Lake, Sheosar Lake, Satpara Lake, Shangri La Lake and Kachura Lake.
The Kachura Lake is 32 km away from Skardu. It is surrounded by huge mountains and can be reached through jeeps. During the spring season the sides of the lake are adorned by nature with lovely yellow and orange flowers and trees are heavy with fruits like peach, apples and apricots.
Satpara is another breathtaking lake located 8 km south of Skardu. It has an island in the middle that adds to the charm of the lake and can be reached through a boat. Jeeps can take tourists to this lake. The lake contains fish, mostly ‘Trout’ and is home to immigrant Siberian birds.
